Asian Cinema: Hua Mulan (2009)

I’m usually not a fan of historical military movies (Red Cliff etc.), endless combat scenes get old for me very fast no matter how epic they are.

And essentially Hua Mulan is exactly that but while most of these films are also all about manly men-bros and their bromances this is obviously about a woman joining the army even though it is forbidden (this circumstance/setting makes this one of the weird movies that feature a strong female main character but still only barely pass the Bechdel test).

It’s far more entertaining and dramatic then most other endless battle films I’ve seen and it’s a lot of fun to watch, so go for it.

Schönes Spiel: Spot the white guy (he’s always in the middle).

Sieht so aus als wird es in DS2 noch weniger Waffen geben, die nicht total bescheuert aussehen (siehe z. B auch hier) als im originalen Dark Souls (and da gab es schon gefühlt mehr völlig übertriebene Waffen als in Demon’s Souls). Ich nehm’ dann weiter das normale Schwert und level es maximal auf.

Diversität in der US-Bevölkerung VS ihre Repräsentation im Fernsehen.

Studio Ghibli macht eine Ronja Räubertochter-Serie. Da ich daran keine Kindheitserinerungen habe, die zerstört werden könnten ist das okay. Ich glaube, das könnte was werden (auch wenn Goro Regie führt …).

Und es wird vielleicht eine (amerikanische) Serie über die Piratin Ching Shih geben. Ich bin verhalten optimistisch, auch wenn die Beteiligten erstmal nicht durch Hochwertiges auffallen (die Serie soll Red Flag heißen). (Via) Oh und Gaimans Anansi Boys kommt auch.

They have a crowdfunding campaign but as it’s so often the case there doesn’t seem to be an option to get the film (drm-free &) digital. Not even a DVD if I’m not mistaken (not that I’d be interested in DVDs anymore). So sad.

Mako Mori Test 2.0

So the Mako Mori test (Via) is supposed to be another way of testing how media is treating female characters in a VERY BASIC way (like the Bechdel test). As pointed out here, passing these test doesn’t mean that the movie or whatever might still be sexist as hell, so focussing on these tests is somewhat problematic (it can still be a good way to get an overview of how staggeringly bad female represantation in (Hollywood mainstream) media is).

Anyway, the Mako Mori test goes like this:

The Mako Mori test is passed if the movie has: a) at least one female character; b) who gets her own narrative arc; c) that is not about supporting a man’s story. (Sauce)

laffbending (Via) pointed out a problem with this: there is no talk about race even though Mako Mori is a Japanese character. So my updated version would be:

The Mako Mori test 2.0 is passed if a movie (or any other story) has:

a) at least one female character that is not white,
b) who gets her own narrative arc,
c) that is not about supporting a man’s story.

And I’m afraid that narrows the few movies that would pass the Mako Mori test 1.0 down even more by quite a bit.

Nochmal ein bisschen was zu der Polizisten wühlen bei nächtlichen Kontrollen munter im SmartphoneIphone(?) eines Bundesbürgers rum-Aktion. So wie’s hier/hier und hier aussieht, war das nicht in Ordnung. Polizisten dürfen erstmal nur deinen Ausweis kontrollieren, ohne Verdacht Rucksack (und Mobiltelephon?) zu durchsuchen geht einfach mal net. Wie das mit IMEI und blah ist wüsste ich schon gern. Und noch ein etwas ausführlicheres Video von Udo Vetter zum Thema Hausdurchuchung. Update: Die Aktion hat dann gottseidank keine Konsequenzen, weil Herr Pirat entweder keinen Screenlock hatte oder dem Polizisten das Handy freigeschaltet hat.

Tahoe LAFS speichert redundant (wie NAS?), dezentralisiert und encrpypted Daten. Allerdings ist das – genau wie der Name – ziemlich nerdig (Kommandozeile!). Leider gibt’s immer noch keine Version von Duplicati, die unter OSX einigermaßen benutzbar ist, sonst wären damit meine Verschlüsselter-Online-Backup-Gelüste ja schon befriedigt. (Via) 

ArkOS: Ziemlich geiles Projekt um entspannt – und mit sehr stylischem Interface – seinen Raspberry Pi als Webserver zu benutzen. Leider noch keine Alternative zu ISPConfig aber das kann ja noch werden … (Via)
