Anime: Fuse: Memoirs of a Hunter Girl

Eine weitere Anime-Produktion, die sich mit dem Hakkenden-Mythos beschäftigt und da einiges ziemlich gut macht: Tomboy* als Hauptfigur, die ewige „die Bösen müssen am Ende sterben, weil böse böse“-Trope wurde dann doch umschifft (auch wenn’s dann für mich am Happy End zwei Stufen zu happy wird – und es mir zeitweise zu slapstickig zugeht und es arg cartoonige Gesichtsverrenkungeng gibt). Das ist eine lange Nummer (knapp zwei Stunden) und nicht ganz Ghibli zu Hochzeiten, geht aber schon in eine gute Richtung. (Via / Via)

* „Wildfang“ übersetzt das irgendwie nicht so wirklich, finde ich immer, gibt’s da keinen sinnvolleren Ausdruck? Ein Mädchen kann ja wild und „mädchenhaft“ sein. Update: Andererseits ist Wildfang natürlich besser weil geschlechterneutral. TomBOY ist nicht so der Burner, weil es dieses degradierende WoMAN-Prinzip benutzt.

Nochmal ein bisschen was zu der Polizisten wühlen bei nächtlichen Kontrollen munter im SmartphoneIphone(?) eines Bundesbürgers rum-Aktion. So wie’s hier/hier und hier aussieht, war das nicht in Ordnung. Polizisten dürfen erstmal nur deinen Ausweis kontrollieren, ohne Verdacht Rucksack (und Mobiltelephon?) zu durchsuchen geht einfach mal net. Wie das mit IMEI und blah ist wüsste ich schon gern. Und noch ein etwas ausführlicheres Video von Udo Vetter zum Thema Hausdurchuchung. Update: Die Aktion hat dann gottseidank keine Konsequenzen, weil Herr Pirat entweder keinen Screenlock hatte oder dem Polizisten das Handy freigeschaltet hat.

Nice one: Linus Neumann schlägt vor als Passwort einfach mal den (MD5 oder anderen) Hash von einer Lieblingsdatei (Bild/Photo) zu nehmen. (Via)

Gabriel macht dann mal weiter mit der wilden Schaumschlägerei in Sachen NSA-Affäre. Das Problem besteht ja nicht (nur) darin, dass Apple & Co sich den Amerikanischen Ausspäh-Gesetzen unterwerfen, sondern dass es diese Gesetze überhaupt gibt. Und wenn Telekommunikationsanbieter verschlüsseln ist das zwar super aber in diesem Fall dank möglicher Backdoors total egal. DeMail halt.

Großbritannien möchte sich ja auch gerne mit ineffektiven Netzsperren lächerlich machen und auch hier wird das Standard-Argument dokumentierte Kindesmißhandlung vorgeschoben (ratet mal, wie die Betroffenen das finden für sowas benutzt zu werden?). Interessanterweise filtern sie aber nicht einfach alles was böseböse ist, sondern der Filter ist Opt-in und neue Computer werden mit dem Programm mit dem das gemacht wird ausgeliefert? So dumm können die nicht sein, softwarebasierte Netzsperren sind ja sicher noch einfacher zu umgehen als DNS-Sperren, oder?

Hübscher Kurzfilm mit erfrischend wenig gendersterotypen Charakteren und vor allem mit erklärendem Text (bis die UT nachgeliefert werden) macht’s auch Sinn:

Games: A Hat In Time

Das schöne Zelda-Windwaker-Retro-Style Game A Hat in Time mit weiblichen Hauptfigur(en?) und Schnurrbärten (aber so wie’s aussieht leider wieder mal genau keinen Frauen im Entwicklerteam) hat jetzt auch einen Kickstarter, der zur Zeit schon bei 200% ist. D.h. Co-op Modus ist am Start.

Das zweite, Horror-Level finde ich ja jetzt erstmal nicht so ansprechend aber mal sehen. (Via)

Animation: »Le Tableau« / »The Picture«

Spoilers!

Wow. Das war ja ziemlich gut. Klassismus/Rassisumus und Religion in einer fantastischen Welt, in der die gemalten Figuren eines Künstlers ein Eigenleben führen. Da der Maler das Bild nicht fertiggestellt hat, existieren manche Figuren nur unvollständig oder sogar nur als Skizze und werden von den fertigen Personen als minderwertig angesehen. Die Unterdrückten hoffen auf die Rückkehr des Malers, damit er auch sie zu vollständig gemalten Menschen macht …

Der Film schafft es wie bisher kaum ein anderer dem Cellshading-Look á la Zelda – Wind Waker eine wirklich malerische Qualität zu geben und die computerisierten Animationen sind nur an ganz wenigen Stellen störend. Die Geschichte hat im zweiten Drittel leider einige Längen und auch das Finale hätte für meinen Geschmack etwas dramatischer ausfallen können. Auch der Klassismus-Symbolik sollte sicher nicht zu weit nachgegangen werden, weil der Film ansonsten ein „Gleichheit durch Aufstieg“ propagiert, was ja sicher nicht die Lösung sein kann. Insgesamt hätte ich es schön gefunden, wenn es noch ein paar mehr Personen außer der Hauptperson Lola gegeben hätte, die sich mit ihrer „Unfertigkeit“ angefreundet hätten, so dass die „Fertigen“ sich mit dieser Gruppe arrangieren müssten und ihre Vorurteile ablegen könnten. Die Lösung, dass jede/r sich halt selber fertig malt, macht wohl nur Sinn, wenn der Weg von Skizze zur ausgemalten Person nicht als gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg sondern als Charakterentwicklung gesehen wird (was ja im Film auch durchaus so gezeigt wird).

Insgesamt war ich sehr überrascht, von diesem hervorragenden Film noch nie etwas gehört zu haben (Pluspunkte gibt’s auch für die farbige Hauptperson, ich hab’ in letzter Zeit das Gefühl, dass Frankreich in dieser Hinsicht sehr viel weiter ist als USA/UK/Deutschland etc.). Jean-François Laguionie werde ich auf jeden Fall ich mal im Auge behalten.

Review: Brave

Spoilers galore!

Well, that was disappointing but nice at the same time. For me Brave was a prime example of expectation being crushed and replaced not by something terrible but goodokay. From the Trailers and Teasers* I thought Brave would be about Merida going on an adventure in the Highlands and I was quite disappointed for the first half of the movie when this was simply not happening.

I had also forgotten that this is a children’s movie aimed at children (unlike for example Brendan and the Secret of Kells (or most Ghibli movies) where it is clear that this is a children’s movie but it’s so good that you can still watch it at any age without flinching at the stupidity of what’s happening on screen every now and then) and therefore being full of stupid jokes and strange cartoon violence. I also reminded me why I don’t watch 3D-animated movies: the characters all look like puppets (which doesn’t have to be a bad thing, see puppet animation) with 3D-animation they look like plastic puppets and everything just feels unreal to me.

Not to forget Pendleton Ward but he seems only doing the FB/Twitter both of which I’m not really a fan. Not that I am a tumblr fan, o no, but at least you can link to that shit (but no comments, soooooo stupid). Okay, his TwitPic is … um, ….

Review: Duelist / Hyeongsa (2005)

This movie is so full of cliches and it does every one of them so perfect. It’s pure awesome: from the ultra-stylized visuals (probably half of the movie is in slow-motion), the soundtrack ranging from Samurai Fiction-style cheesy rock to orchestral uber-schmalz, to the characters: Namsoon, the main character is a tomboy, a police detective of course falling in love with the beautiful mysterious, melancholic and androgynous villain. Guess if it ends badly? It sure does!

The story isn’t really important and I don’t really get it every single time I watch it but I love everything about the movie, the ridiculous fighting scenes (not much flying, though), Namsoon drunk and crying and screaming and kicking ass at the same time, snow falling in slow motion. This is asian cinema at its best, gender-reversed and wonderful.*

I also love the A Serious Man-style beginning that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the rest of the movie: the story of a man who invites himself into the spooky house of a sexy single woman, which gets interrupted because the guy telling the story is distracted. Why never find out what happens next. Nevertheless the thing comes to full circle because the last scene of the movie is the same guy telling how he witnessed the tragic „united in swordplay“-scene (which might arguably the real end of the movie) and almost jerked off to it.**

Oh, and don’t bother with the TV-series based on the same manhwa, it looks just terrible.

*Also no women or other supporting characters dying shortly before the final show-off as a plot-motif. Thumbs up.
** What is a nice comment on how this movie is taking itself not at all serious.

EDIT 2014: Pretty sure this doesn’t pass the Bechdel test, though (and if only barely), since this is one of these strange „only female character in there is the main character“-movies. It still totally rocks, anyway.
