Klafter

Dank meinem Vater lese ich grad das wunderbare Buch »Eine Schachtel Streichhölzer« von Nicholson Baker. Weil ich beim letzten Lübeck-Besuch nicht nur meinen Mp3-Player sondern auch Lektüre für die Zugfahrt vergessen hatte, war er so frei mir etwas auszuhelfen.

Eine der Stellen, die mich beim Lesen im Zug laut Auflachen ließen war folgende:

»Nachdem wir die meisten Abfälle verbrannt hatten, rief ich einen Holzhändler an und bestellte ein Klafter. Ein Klafter ist eine Maßeinheit, die ›eine stattliche Menge‹ bedeutet.«

Discarded Illustrations for the Nord/LB-Öffentliche

I’m doing my very first official, paid illustration job with two fellow students for a charity organisation called »Stiftung Nord/LB-Öffentliche«.

It’s a hell lot of work but I really feel like I am learning a lot too so it’s kinda fun.

We figured out that we wanted to base the whole concept of the work on a tie in the colors of the organisation and that tie goes kinda mad and changes into all kinds of things that make a good metaphor of what the foundation stands for, so that in the end it has nothing to do with a tie anymore but the colors are still left.

So here are some of the pics that did not make it into the final report:

A rich man’s privilege

This is a doodling I did on the trainride back from my hometown Lübeck last weekend. With all the beautiful landscape outside the trainwindows I somehow always end up drawing trees and stuff.

And yes, that is my adress. It’s actually the envelope this semester’s Student ID came in. Thanks to our f***ing antisocial, conservative government these things are now only available for guys that have 500 € on the loose per semester (can I say that?…).

So I am officially putting this drawing on sale here for 500 €. ^__^

EDIT: Well, ACTUALLY my parents just bought that drawing without even knowing it (and they got a »Special Parent’s Price Reduction« from me of course…). They always give me money for everything and I am very grateful for that and at the same time I feel bad taking it all the time.

So thank you so much.

»The God of Small Things« Teaser

I totally forgot that I put this teaser online for the portfolio I handed in for the Sokrates/Erasmus exchange-program.

This was one of the tasks in a »Macromedia Director« class from the basic studies. We were asked to do a short teaser for an imaginary movie only with typography and graphic symbols. I know that it is not very good (it’s much too long) but I still like the atmosphere.

Because of Director‘s unability to export the teaser properly, I‘ve done the clip for a second time with »After Effects« in far less than a quarter of the time it took me in Director. What do we learn from that? Director really sucks. It does.

Please note that this is not a real trailer.

I don’t think that Mrs. Roy will ever give permission for an adaption of her book and I am quite happy about this because »The God of Small Things« is one of the best books I’ve ever read and a movie would only destroy my very own images I have while reading it.

In addition Arundhati Roy is one of the very few people I consider to be a role model. Her political writings and engagement is very encouraging. I adore her.

Studio 4°C’s »Arete Hime« / »Princess Arete«

Another wonderful film already, I’m so happy. Like everyone else it was quiet surprising for me to watch such a film coming from Studio 4°C in 2001 because it’s a classical fairytale with the look of an 80’s anime. Very beautiful though (and I think they used some 3D-effects what was kinda fun to see in such a classical looking anime and they were really good because inconspicuous made). But that was Studio 4°C is all about in the end: being versatile.

Anyway, this is a totally amazing medieval fantasy story that could perfectly be one of the good, early Studio Ghibli-movies, with a sweet yet independant, young female main character, beautiful music an interesting story and actually some philosophical background.

Of course there seems to be no (subtitled) DVD around like for most of the great Studio 4°C movies.

A nice, funny thing, here. You, sick, sick internet. Sweet.

Tery Gilliam’s »Tideland«

Brilliant. Just brilliant. I’ve been longing for just one good film for so long now and here it is. I’ve been watching Gilliam’s »Brothers Grimm« recently which was one of the »not too bad« movies that I’ve watched so many of in the last time and I expected that »Tideland« would be better but I didn’t expect it to be THIS better. So this is a movie about a young girl with a fantastic imagination, who happened to be born into an American white-trash hill-billy surrounding. You start wondering if it isn’t little odd that this young girl is preparing the shots for her father’s »little vacations« but this is one of the least odd things about to happen. Everyone’s a freak, some are nice and some are not.

This is an elaborated, fantastic, sick, wonderful hell of a film. Watch it.

Collage – Gustav Meyrink’s »The Golem«

Yiha, I just ran a backup prog and read about this work that I’ve done as a present for a friend’s birthday in 2006 in the program’s logfile. I always adored Meyrink’s book almost as much for his gorgeous description of Prague as for the mystical parts.

I rarely do collages but this one’s one of the few I was satisfied with in the end (the pic above is just a detail, click it for the whole work).

Illustration Friday – Wave’s Not Dead

Okay, this is my first submission for Illustration Friday and it’s not finished but I want to submit it anyway because I always wanted to take part in Illustration Friday and today it’s now or never.

This is also my first digital image ever that I have done with a Graphic Tablet. I’m totally not used to it but it’s fun on the other hand.

Since I’m not that old I don’t really remember the 80’s prober but one of the few things I like about them would be the Punk/Wave/Gothic movement. Though I don’t listen to that music I kinda like the visual style (which totally sucked aside from that in the 80’s).

Der Stier in der Fischfabrik 2

Irgendwie bin ich natürlich wieder voll nicht dazu gekomen mich weiter mit diesem Seminar zu beschäftigen und aus irgendwelchen Gründen ist der Herr dann nach Neujahr plötzlich sehr viel jünger geworden als er vorher war aber das bieg ich schon noch alles wieder hin.

Ich hab irgendwie so das Gefühl noch nicht so wirklich zum Kern dieser Geschichte vorgedrungen zu sein: Dieser »Stier«-Typ versteckt sich halt über Jahre mit dem Raucher zusammen auf so einem Fischfangschiff (wo sie auch arbeiten), weil sie beide was zu verbergen haben und hängen die ganze Zeit miteinander rum und nichts passiert auf engstem Raum. Und irgendwann bringt der Stier den Raucher um. Und ich muss sowohl noch diese Schiffsatmosphere besser hinkriegen als auch diese Situation, daß der Stier halt so ein ruhiger, behebiger Kerl ist in dessen tiefsten Innern es aber wahrscheinlich (auch wenn es ihm selbst nicht bewusst ist) die ganze Zeit voll am brodeln ist. Und das entläd sich dann irgendwann alt.

Das Ganze beruht übrigens auf einer Krimi-Mini-Kurzgeschichte von Roger M. Fiedler, die in irgendeiner deutschen Tagesteitung erschienen ist. Ähm. Übrigens anscheinend einer der ganz wenigen guten, die es da so gab.

So, jetzt auch noch mal ganz offiziell: Nach langem hin und her und vorbereiten gibt es jetzt hier jeweils eine kleine Seite für mein erstes Projekt im Haupstudium und mein Vordiplom (aus der Nennung in dieser Reihenfolge lässt sich durchaus mein persönlicher Favourit erkennen, allerdings eher vom Gesamtergebnis als vom Thema/Inhalt her).

Rate that movie!

criticker.com is not the movie-version of last.fm I always dreamed of, the layout/design is totally ugly and the navigation really sucks but it’s still better than a similar German site I discovered recently.

So, I’m gonna go with this, of course they don’t have too many of my favourite films (only the first movie from the »A Chinese Ghost Story«-Trilogy) and some films have strange names (like »Tetsuo – The Iron Man« is »The Ironman«, who will recognice it with that title?).

Anyway, here’s my (ugly) profile

»Gwoemul« / »The Host«

Man, this rocks.

»The Host« is much better than »Renaissance« or »Death Note« (which pretty much sucked either way) or anything else I’ve watched recently. And it is of course in no way compareable to any stupid American monster-movie like the US-remake of »Godzilla« for example. I really liked that it was a drama more than a monster movie most of the time and in the parts where it was a monster movie it was just wonderful archaic one, the heroes not fighting the monster with an army and tanks but with bows, mollotows and spears.

The CGI was pretty good (except for the fire-effect), or rather – considering that it had that much screen time – it was pretty awesome. One of the very few CGI characters that really felt real (nice to compare it with Ryuk from the »Death Note«-movie which is perfectly the other extreme: the lame animation was the last straw that broke the movie’s back).

And again: I totally adore they way of South Korean movie soundtracks just like »Sympathy for Lady Vengeance« for example »The Host« has a solid yet beautiful orchestrated, melancholy soundtrack with lots of solemn string arrangements.

Now for the bad news, Universal has bought the rights for a remake. Just like every other fan of Asian cinema I so much hate them for »stealing« the good ideas and making lots of money with it instead if supporting the original by pushing it in the US with a big theatrical release. »Shall we dansu?« is such a wonderful, warmhearted Japanese movie and expcept for some freaks like me no one knows it but a lots of stupid people know the crappy remake Richard Gere with Jennifer Lopez (I had the pleasure of being forced to kinda watch it during a flight. Gross.).

Who’s in betting that they will change the ending concerning someone NOT dying in the end?

Anyway, a really good watch, I liked the characters, the story, the CGI, the music even the ending! And that did not happen to me very often in the last year.

EDIT: I don’t believe it: »The Host« is getting a German theatrical release on March, 15th. On the other hand, they announced Jet Li’s »Fearless« and Terry Gilliam’s »Tideland« for 2006 and as far as I know we are still waiting for both of them.

Mein aktuelles »Wir veranstalten komische Sachen mit unserer Gesichtsbehaarung«-Experiment ist ja unkontrollierter Kotelettenwuchs (auch eins der bescheuertsten Wörter überhaupt, wikipedia schlägt immerhin »Backenbart« als Alternative vor, was es meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz trifft aber wunderbar altmodisch klingt).

Viel zu sehen ist nach meinem eigenen Empfinden bisher nicht, sie werden zwar immer länger aber nicht wirklich buschiger. Allerdings gibt es einen anderen, recht kranken Nebeneffekt: man kann beim Fahrradfahren den Wind in ihnen rauschen hören…

Audrey Lyrics/Transcription – »Vague« (from »Visible Forms«)

Okay, I got the first Audrey album »Visible Forms« for christmas and it turned our to be one of the best albums of the year. Though I am very happy that it’s a wonderful digipack (except for the typagraphy which kind of ruins it by being not as »handmade« as the beautiful graphics) there are no lyrics included. And I seem to be unable to find them on the net. I tried to make a transcription of the track »Vague« becauce it’s my favourite for now but I don’t seem to be to good in doing this kind of stuff. I know that probably no one will ever read this but if someone has the lyrics or corrections on this, please be so kind and leave a comment.

»Renaissance«

This sure is cool. Like pushing the visual style of »Sin City« to the limit.

I don’t know if I like it 100% but the story is surprisingly good (I really liked the ending, what is something that did not happen to me with many movies recently). And they made human body-movement not look totally stupid in a CGI movie! Can you believe that? Step aside Enki Bilal with your dumb, G-Police/Playstation One-like CGI-characters that f***ed up »Immortel« completly (a movie that is a very interesting darker version of Luc Besson’s »Fifth Element« stylewise beside of that on my opinion, but he totally ruined it with the CGI…).

I haven’t seen »A Scanner Darkly« yet (and I probably never will because I so much dislike Keanu Reeves, but if I have the chance to see it I might try to ignore him) but I think this team has done the better job. Still the shadows, especially in the characters’ faces look a little unrealistic from time to time.

And again neither this nor »Scanner Darkly« will hit the big screen around here which would be the way they ought to be watched. It’s depressing.

Der Stier in der Fischfabrik

So, dann doch mal wieder ein kleiner Eintrag. Eine Skizze zu einem Fachseminar, daß ich dieses Semester bei Frau Helmbold belege, das einen unendlich langen Titel hat, den niemand sich merken kann aber bei dem es letztendlich um Kriminalkurzgeschichten geht. Ich bin weder mit dem Style noch mit der Kolorierung vollauf zufrieden aber vielleicht wird das ja noch.

Und dicke Menschen zu zeichnen macht ja mal sowas von Spaß…

EDIT: Ja ja, wenn man nicht immer VOLL konzentriert ist beim zeichnen, ne? Warum blutet der Fischlaib aber der Kopf nicht? Das wird gleich mal geändert (in der Offline-Version…).

So they’re doing an animated Hellboy-series for TV. And guess what: the character-design is unbelievable lame.

Why can’t the keep the Mignola-Style like they do in »The Amazing Screw-On Head«? Again I have to say: »Please leave mainstream-animation to the Japanese guys, they know how to do the job. Americans don’t. And most other countries neither.« This looks like just another stupid’s kid animation. I really adore Mike Mignolas work but this is a shame, it seems like a sell-out of his work to me.

And what’s with that crappy pop-metal song in the intro? Man, this is so stupid, it makes me angry.

Seemann

The video to Rammstein’s »Seemann« (probably my most favourite Rammstein-song) is probably the most stupid Rammstein-video I’ve ever seen.

I hate it when things are like this.

EDIT: Cool, Apocalyptica feat. Nine Hagen’s cover (which was always my favourite version of the song) has a video that is almost as cool as the song itself. Long-haired, moshing guys playing cello, I love them. Okay, actually I don’t, their new stuff is totally overloaded and boring but the concept’s still cool and they’ve been at the time of this video. Plus, unlike Rammstein’s video Apocalyptica’s clip has something that can roughly considered to be a plot: an old guy rowing to a lighthouse.

And there are mermaids too.

Sad thing to see that Nina Hagen which I always kinda liked – not as a person or a musician but as an icon like some kind of German Marilyn Manson – has sold her soul to German brain-amputeed star-search television-shows. I hated her when I saw her side by side with c-prominents looking like a corpse in a world she definitely not belongs to.

Massaker

Komisch, wie Gedanken ihre Bahnen ziehen aber ich muss grad über eine Sache nachdenken, die ich gestern bei den Nachrichten von irgendeinem Dreckssender (RTL, RTL 2?) gesehen habe. Es ging um das Massaker bei den Amish in Pennsylvania. Irgendeine Frau, die sich mal wieder nicht zu schade war, sich vor laufender Kamera mental zu entblößen meinte, für die Amish-Mädchen sei das ja besonders schlimm, sie würden ja sowas nicht aus dem Fernsehen kennen.

Als ob es für mich weniger schlimm ist, wenn jemand dem Mädchen neben mir den Schädel wegbläst, nur weil ich sowas schonmal im Fernsehen gesehen habe. Was für ein absolut kranker Gedanke.

Der Text auf der Innenseite stammt von »The Ghosts You Draw on My Back« der wundervollen isländischen Band Múm, die das Fundament der CD bilden. Witzig, Múm habe ich über o.g.»Hu Die / Butterfly« kennengelernt, weil sie auf dem (leider nicht existierenden) Soundtrack sind.

»Hu Die«-Poster

Hier ein Paar Poster zu Yan Yan Maks wundervollem Film »Butterfly – Hu Die«. Die Poster gibt es hauptsächlich weil outnow.ch mal wieder so schöne, große Filmstills, bzw. anderes Material am Start hatte, das dazu einlud. Ich bin jetzt nicht mehr so hundertpronzentig zufrieden mit dem Glow, da wär wohl ganz oder garnicht mehr angebracht gewesen als diese krude Mischung aber nett sind sie immer noch.

Terry Gilliam’s »Tideland«

Terry Gilliam (genau: »Monty Python«) hat einen neuen Film gemacht. Also schon 2005 aber vielleicht könnte der ja auch mal hier an den Start gehen (war für Ende September 2006 angekündigt, sieht aber nicht mehr so aus). Nach »The Brothers Grimm«, den ich noch nicht gesehen habe, der ja aber wohl eher Popcornkino als Geniestreich war, kommt jetzt »Tideland« (das Intro zur Website ist so schlecht, daß es fast schon wieder witzig ist), der irgendwie entfernt an Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean’s »Mirror Mask« erinnert. Yeah.

»Death Note 2 – The Last Name« Trailer

Whee, auf YouTube gibt’s einen Trailer zum zweiten Teil der Realverfilnung von »Death Note«.

Und ich hab noch nichtmal den ersten Teil gesehen. Argh.

Den gibt’s zwar auch bei YouTube aber wer will sich das wohl geben? Dann doch wohl eher die BBC-Dokumentation »Japanorama«.

EDIT: Ich habe den ersten Teil inzwischen gesehen. Enttäuschend. Die 90er-Jahre-CGI bei Ryuk war irgendwie nur einer von vielen Minuspunkten für diesen komplett zu vernachlässigenden Film. Kann sein, daß es halt nicht so spannend ist, wenn man die Handlung schon kennt. Aber irgendwie war auch Licht/Kamera etc. eher TV-Produktion als großes Kino.
