Ich weiß noch, dass ich das damals super faszinierend und traurig fand, dass Ende so unfassbar fantastische Geschichten schrieb, also Zugang zu solchen Welten hatte in den Briefen aber auf mich irgendwie verzweifelt wirkte in seinem Wunsch sowas auch erträumen zu können.

I didn’t have to pay custom fees this time, which is interesting. I don’t know if this is down to just luck or the fact that last time they arrived in a tube and this time in a flat (big) letter. The packaging was excellent as well, quite sturdy and well made.

EDIT: Ordered some more for my family, I had to pay customs (Germany not UK?) this time (7€ on a 100€ order) but the prints are just mind-blowing again! Aaahhh, if only we had something like this in Europe that does not get flown in from the US! 😭 There has to be something, right?
So, looks like I’m not really updating this anymore (I might in the future if I ever do a bigger personal project again).

Glasswire (Via) sieht sehr sympatisch (und für Windows untypisch graphisch ansprechend) aus. Is’ aber leider nicht Open Source. Ich habe bisher Tinywall benutzt aber so wirklich toll war das auch nicht.
Auch Glasswire kann, glaube ich, Programme nur entweder zulassen oder nicht (indem man – wie mir die Anleitung verriet – das Feuer-Symbol klickt). Ich als verwöhnter Macbenutzer, der Finetuning á la Little Snitch/Hands Off! gewöhnt ist und Programmen verbieten will Google Analytics zu benutzen aber trotzdem noch zu updaten ist da natürlich noch nicht total zufrieden aber das ist schonmal ein Anfang (und die kosten halt auch ein „bisschen“ mehr). Und besser als der Fuckup der sich unter Linux Firewall nennt isses allemal.

Allerdings nicht für die normale Bevölkerung. Die völlig aus dem Ruder gelaufene Gefängniss-Politik der USA ist leider nix neues aber hier gibt’s nochmal ein schönes Video dazu (blendet einen der Gründe – dass es eine Industrie gibt, die an den Gefangenen sehr gut verdient – leider völlig aus, aber, na ja …). I finally got around to updating my portfolio site to fit the style of the blog. It’s very basic and I plan to to sub-pages for more illustrations, the projects etc. … Some day. It should also be a tinsy bit better for mobile devices (though I get almost zero visits with those) and I got rid of the <table> at last, yay!
Btw, I just learned how to do these screenshots with OSX: Cmd-Shift-4, Space, click the window. Awesome, though I’m not sure if you really need all the whitespace/shadows around it.

Weil ich grade im Zuge der erneuten Angriffe auf die Netzneutralität, der immer wiederkehrenden VDS und anderen Zensurangriffe wieder drüber nachgedacht hab: die Alternative zum über Knoten laufendes, also einfach zu kontrollierendem Internet* nennt sich: Wireless Mesh Network. Also Freifunk.
Projekt Starfish (Via) scheint erstmal auf Eis gelegt worden zu, der originale Link ist nicht mehr da (aber hier im Internet Archive) und auf der Seite gibt’s erstmal dazu keine Links. Mh, das PDF scheint aber noch da zu sein.
Oh, cool, die P2PFoundation hat eine Liste mit Alternativen: im Allgemeinen nennt sich das NextNet, im Konkreten u.a. Project Byzantium (Via) und GuiFi.
*Und weil die zentralisierte Infrastruktur noch nicht schlimm genug ist, kommt jetzt immer mehr auch noch der zentralisierte Application-Layer oben drauf, danke Facebook, Google, Twitter & Co. Das kann nur finster enden.
I played around with Mozilla’s Lightbeam yesterday, a fancy plugin that visualizes which of the websites you visit load content from the same services. This is interesting because these services could potentially spy on your browsing across sites even without the use of cookies, supercookies etc. Or at least the owner of the service knows that someone accessed a specific site at a specific point in time and loaded a specific file from their server.
Anyway, maybe it’s only my personal taste but Google seems to be one of the top companies that would be able to do this (yes, aside of NSA and all the other government agencies, obviously). So surprising, I know!
Youtube is obvious, more or less every blog includes embedded Youtube-videos (including this one). I’m thinking of countering this with preview-gifs (or static jpgs) á la Boing Boing, Nerdcore, Kotaku etc. But this convenient „Click on the gif to play the video“ seems to demand a fair bit of programming (I’m guessing IFRAME?). I’m not sure about a solution for this yet.
The more interesting thing is fonts.googleapis.com. A lot of websites of seem to load stuff from there and I think we have to thank WordPress for that. Because the build-in themes that come with WordPress connect to Googles font-hosting service even if you have customized the themes and are using you own fonts. The HTML for this is generated via PHP and while there seems to be a way to turn this off I wasn’t able to do so.
But luckily there’s a plugin to disable Google Fonts! Thank you, Milan Dinić!
Hier, eine Liste mit mythischen Kreaturen aus dem reichen Sagenschatz unserer Welt, als kleine Anregung mal nach Alternativen zu den ausgelutschten Vampiren und Zombies zu suchen.
Das ist witzig, mir kam letztens das Bild in den Kopf, dass unser Medienkonsum ungefähr so ist als würden wir immer und immer wieder nur die erste Seite von einem sehr, sehr dicken Buch lesen. Es gibt hunderte, tausende von Geschichten von den diversesten Figuren, die wir erzählen könnten aber wir lesen immer nur die erste Seite (Variation auf Variation von white guy doing white guy stuff) und manchmal, ganz selten lesen wir den ersten Absatz von Seite zwei, drei oder vier nur um nach diesem ersten Absatz verschreckt wieder auf Seite eins zu blättern und da weiter zu lesen. Das ist das Äquivalent zu diesen vielen grotesken Fuck-ups wie, um nur eins von hunderten von Beispielen zu nennen, The Last Samurai, ein Film der – anscheinend – von Samurai in Japan handelt aber die Hauptperson ist … ein weißer Mann. Und wenn es dann mal nicht (nur) um einen weißen Mann geht, sind die Chancen hoch, dass er trotzdem von einem weißen Mann gespielt wird.*
* Wow, was redet der da für eine scheiße, „try to right the wrongs of the past“ my ass, du machst, indem du einem Erstbewohner Amerikas mal wieder die Möglichkeit nimmst sich selbst auf der großen Leinwand zu verkörpern genau das Gegenteil: du setzt die Unterdrückung und systematische Ausrottung dieser Menschen fort. Und wenn du von einer Gruppe als „sie“ und nicht als „wir“ redest, nützt es auch nichts, wenn deine Urgroßmutter vielleicht zu dieser Gruppe gehörte.
So the Mako Mori test (Via) is supposed to be another way of testing how media is treating female characters in a VERY BASIC way (like the Bechdel test). As pointed out here, passing these test doesn’t mean that the movie or whatever might still be sexist as hell, so focussing on these tests is somewhat problematic (it can still be a good way to get an overview of how staggeringly bad female represantation in (Hollywood mainstream) media is).
Anyway, the Mako Mori test goes like this:
The Mako Mori test is passed if the movie has: a) at least one female character; b) who gets her own narrative arc; c) that is not about supporting a man’s story. (Sauce)
laffbending (Via) pointed out a problem with this: there is no talk about race even though Mako Mori is a Japanese character. So my updated version would be:
The Mako Mori test 2.0 is passed if a movie (or any other story) has:
a) at least one female character that is not white,
b) who gets her own narrative arc,
c) that is not about supporting a man’s story.
And I’m afraid that narrows the few movies that would pass the Mako Mori test 1.0 down even more by quite a bit.
Die 72. Folge (und die, äh, folgenden) von Logbuch Netzpolitik war insofern interessant, als das es – nach einem etwas seichten Einsteig – darum ging, inwiefern wir unsere westliche Lebensweise™ überhaupt noch lupenreine Demokratie, die es für Geld zu kaufen gibt bezeichnen können, wenn staatliche Organe* ihre Bürger rund um den Globus ohne Anfangsverdacht 24h überwachen. Und wer das Internet nicht mag, hat ja dank Kameras, Drohnen, Gesundheitskarten, Ausweisen, Datenverkauf und -leaks von diversen Behörden und anderen Insitutionen auch genügend Gelegenheit ins Getriebe zu geraten.
