They have a crowdfunding campaign but as it’s so often the case there doesn’t seem to be an option to get the film (drm-free &) digital. Not even a DVD if I’m not mistaken (not that I’d be interested in DVDs anymore). So sad.

Julie Dillon’s fantasy/science fiction illustrations feature lots of POC/WOC and women not necessarily fitting todays beauty standards (the earlier works seem to be more the usual fantasy stuff, so it’s beautiful to see this change). Mako Mori Test 2.0

So the Mako Mori test (Via) is supposed to be another way of testing how media is treating female characters in a VERY BASIC way (like the Bechdel test). As pointed out here, passing these test doesn’t mean that the movie or whatever might still be sexist as hell, so focussing on these tests is somewhat problematic (it can still be a good way to get an overview of how staggeringly bad female represantation in (Hollywood mainstream) media is).

Anyway, the Mako Mori test goes like this:

The Mako Mori test is passed if the movie has: a) at least one female character; b) who gets her own narrative arc; c) that is not about supporting a man’s story. (Sauce)

laffbending (Via) pointed out a problem with this: there is no talk about race even though Mako Mori is a Japanese character. So my updated version would be:

The Mako Mori test 2.0 is passed if a movie (or any other story) has:

a) at least one female character that is not white,
b) who gets her own narrative arc,
c) that is not about supporting a man’s story.

And I’m afraid that narrows the few movies that would pass the Mako Mori test 1.0 down even more by quite a bit.

Review: Malinda Lo – „Huntress“

Interesting: I read the previous book in this series, „Ash“ and I didn’t like it much. The bland and boring all-white European fairytale setting and the glowing vampires cliched fairies/elves where just so awful that the lesbian twist couldn’t make up for it in this failed Cinderella retelling.

„Huntress“ is said to be set in the same world but a few hundred years earlier and interestingly there is an Asian touch to the standard fantasy world (I wonder where that disappeared to in „Ash“’s time). It’s still ye good olde fantasy escapism tough, nothing special and the elves are still fucking awful (can’t decide if I hate them more then orcs and dragons but fairies a no-go) but it’s much, much better then „Ash“. I’m not exactly sure why but I think the world is fleshed out more, the character are less cut-out and there’s actually a story with a long and perilous journey, scary monsters™ and people dying. Unfortunately there is also a really stupid and unnecessary ending involving more fairy bullshit (and a cameo of the Forest Spirit from Mononoke Hime as a unicorn). I think Malinda Lo really got better in writing and storytelling between „Ash“ and „Huntress“, it’s a nice thing to witness.

This is clearly YA with lots of blushing and reddening cheeks but the (lesbian) love story is more believable and intimate then in it’s sequel. I don’t want to over-­interpret the fact that while the hetero-lovestory (the usual inter-class one, but between a prince and a female guard this time around) seems to get an happy ending, the lesbian one is DOOOMED! DOOOOMED! because when you want to be a magicianesstress you can’t have sex be in love (= bullshit).

If you want easy to read escapism fantasy outside the all white, all hetero box this is well worth a read (I’d recommend stopping after she burned evil female boss though, because as I said all that follows just makes no sense).

Nochmal ein bisschen was zu der Polizisten wühlen bei nächtlichen Kontrollen munter im SmartphoneIphone(?) eines Bundesbürgers rum-Aktion. Polizisten dürfen erstmal nur deinen Ausweis kontrollieren, ohne Verdacht Rucksack (und Mobiltelephon?) zu durchsuchen geht einfach mal net. Wie das mit IMEI und blah ist wüsste ich schon gern. Und noch ein etwas ausführlicheres Video von Udo Vetter zum Thema Hausdurchuchung. Update: Die Aktion hat dann gottseidank keine Konsequenzen, weil Herr Pirat entweder keinen Screenlock hatte oder dem Polizisten das Handy freigeschaltet hat.

Gabriel macht dann mal weiter mit der wilden Schaumschlägerei in Sachen NSA-Affäre. Das Problem besteht ja nicht (nur) darin, dass Apple & Co sich den Amerikanischen Ausspäh-Gesetzen unterwerfen, sondern dass es diese Gesetze überhaupt gibt. Und wenn Telekommunikationsanbieter verschlüsseln ist das zwar super aber in diesem Fall dank möglicher Backdoors total egal. DeMail halt.

C.R.O.P. — Combined Regenerative Organic-food Production

C.R.O.P. ein weiteres Aquaponik-Forschungsprojekt, vorgestellt auf der SIGINT13. Die Verwenden als Einspeise sowohl Pflanzenabfälle als auch Urin, was ich sehr spannend finde.

Der Vortrag hat erhöhten Nerd-Alarm und wirft tw. sehr mit Fachbegriffen um sich, ist aber sehr interessant und auch insgesamt verständlich:

Hier gibt es eine praktische Übersicht aller bisher beackerter Persönlichkeiten, die meisten davon sagen mir entweder nichts oder sind mir sehr egal, aber es gibt schon ein paar, wo’s dann doch ein bisschen schmerzt, dass mal so gesammelt zu sehen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, … äh und das war’s schon. Und auch wenn er zu den Leuten gehört, die mir echt egal sind, war mir nicht klar, wie John Lennon abgeht. (Via)

Interessant auch diese Gegenstimme, dass kulturelle Aneignung (ist das die gängige Übersetzung von „Cultural Appropriation“?) nicht immer schlimm sein muss. Das Problem ist hier, glaube ich, das in dem Text einfach kein Unterschied gemacht wird zwischen dem Austausch/der Beinflussung von verschiedenen Kulturen, was halt immer passiert und normal ist und Cultural Appropriation (oberflächliche Vereinnahmung von Symbolen anderer Kulturen, meistens ausgeführt von Mitgliedern der „dominanten“ Kultur = der Westen™).
