Sieht so aus als wird es in DS2 noch weniger Waffen geben, die nicht total bescheuert aussehen (siehe z. B auch hier) als im originalen Dark Souls (and da gab es schon gefühlt mehr völlig übertriebene Waffen als in Demon’s Souls). Ich nehm’ dann weiter das normale Schwert und level es maximal auf.

Unfassbar. EDIT: Leider ist das natürlich bei „phantastischen“ Spielen nicht anders, z. B. Podcasts: Der Computer kann alles & Nrrrdz

 

Ich will 2014 (noch) mehr Podcasts hören, die mindestens eine Frau (jahaa, hohe Ansprüche) als Teilnehmende/Sprecherin/Podcasterin haben. DCKA schafft das mit 50 Prozent und ist eine gute Alternative zu den ganzen Male Nerds Only-Podcasts (Hallo, Metaebene/CCC) da draußen.

In einer der letzten Folgen wurde zum Beispiel dieser gruselige, reaktionäre Beitrag* von fefe besprochen (und auch nochmal auf die großartige Zerpflückung von sanczny verwiesen) und auch über die Implikationen von Assange auf dem 30c3 geredet (wobei mir da zu wenig auf diesen „Helden sind auch nur Menschen mit Fehlern“-Quatsch eingegangen wurde, der in der Diskussion gerne kam).

Oh, ah, die eine Hälfte des Duos ist Kathrin Ganz, die auch den sehr hörenswerten (leider eher unregelmäßig erscheinenden) Nrrrdz (den dann wiederum mit Maj Bootred von heiter scheitern) macht, cool!

DCKA, läuft im FSK, Podcastfeed am besten selbst machen über freie-radios.net (wenn’s sein muss hier als Feedburner aber das ist ja böse).

*Tja, „Bildzeitung für Nerds“ stimmt halt leider auch von der politischen Ausrichtung.

Howto: Invalid Encoding with Truecrypt volumes under Linux

I’m automounting my Truecrypt data partition on login under Linux Mint. Unfortunately, the standard to mounting Truecrypt volumes seems to be iso8859-1 (at least for FAT32 volumes) which leads to the dreaded „Invalid Encoding“ in certain filenames (I’ve seen this for European special characters like ä and ø as well as for Japanese and Chinese characters).

The solution is to put iocharset=utf8 in the Mount Options when mounting the volume (or putting it into the Truecrypt Preferences when you want it for every volume you mount).

UPDATE: Looks like when automounting Truecrypt volume via Startup Applications the Mount Options don’t really work, but this does: truecrypt --auto-mount=favorites --fs-options=iocharset=utf8 (Via)

Es soll einen crowd-gefundeten Nachfolger des open source & open hardware(?) Mobiltelefons OpenMoko im Stil des N900 geben, passenderweise Neo900 genant. Ich bin ja kein Freund von Hardware-Tastaturen und es ist auch ganz schön klotzig aber ein großer Schritt vom OpenMoko, was ja eher, äh, „speziell“ aussah. Music Player: Clementine

I can’t actually remember why I dumped iTunes/Songbird in favor of Enqueue in the first place (no monitored folders?) but I have now ditched that again for Clementine, which is unbelievable ugly (it’s based on Amarok, so I guess it’s KDE’s bad influence?) but has everything you could ever want, like global shortcuts via Mac Media Keys (if you free them from Itunes’ grip) Growl-support, good Gnome/Cinnamon integration, … And it’s open source, cross-plattform etc.!

Ubuntu/Gnome: Left-Handed Mouse & Right-Handed Touchpad

I’m running Linux Mint (14/15) on a Macbook and while (for mind-boggling reasons) all is well when running the system live from an memory stick once I install the OS and set up the mouse to be left-handed the touchpad becomes unusable because it is switced to left-handed as well (so tab-click becomes secondary-click which is obviously bullshit). After a lot of unsuccessful fiddling with synclient I recently found a way to solve this problem for Cinnamon/Gnome.

Install/open dconfig-editor (there’s also the gconfig-editor and maybe another one but these don’t have the entry we need)

Search (Ctrl+f)  for touchpad and change the value of left-handed to right.

Restart the session and enjoy!

Get back ctrl-arrow keys shortcut to switch to the beginning/end of a line in OSX

Longest post title ever.

I’m currently trying out OSX 10.9. I’m coming from 10.6.8 and one of the many annoying little things is that Ctrl-left/right arrow is now used to jump between Spaces/fullscreen apps (which I don’t use) and therefore you can’t use it to jump to the beginning or end of a line of text (in a text editor, e-mail, Firefox bar) anymore. I actually tried to get accustomed to the other shortcut you can use to jump to the beginning and end of a line Ctrl-a/e but that is not really a shortcut that works that well.

But: you can turn off the switching of Spaces with Ctrl-arrow keys in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Mission Control (these are on-the-fly translations from a German OS) and tadaaa: welcome back old shortcut.

Another little annoyance gone. There isn’t anything in 10.9 that I like better then 10.6.8, though. If it turns out that battery life really is longer I might stay with 10.9.

P.S.: Another little thing: three finger-swipe to go back and forth between websites in Firefox (and Safari?) turned into two finger-swipe.

Syncinc local files á la Dropbox with Synkron

I while ago I found Synkron, a nifty syncing tool which was almost perfect for my podcast listening setup: I’m downloading podcasts with the great open source player Miro (I’m using the 3.5 version, newer versions are strange and cluttered to a point where I find it almost unusable) and I’m then using Synkron to sync the Miro folder via USB to my phone (I tried to figure out doing this via wi-fi but that’s a mess).

The problem was that whenever I deleted a file on the computer or the phone but not on the other device by default Synkron would copy it back from the respectively other device, so it was more or less impossible to delete a file (in reality you’d of course know most of the times which podcasts you already listened too but stil …).

The solution is as follows:

Click the „Advanced“ button on the bottom left corner in Synkron and tick „Detect collusions“. Tadaa! Now, if you delete a file on the phone, next time Synkron will delete it on the computer and vice versa.

EDIT: For some reason Syncron skips all the files it is supposed to sync in the Linux/Ubuntu-Version, but Unison does the job, it seems.

Not only is this shit unreadable except for the last two comments, it is also almost impossible to find out who said what because THE NAMES ARE NOWHERE NEAR THE FUCKING COMMENTS. How hard can it be to fix this fuckup? But guess if this has been going on for years and years?

I don’t understand why people are still using this trainwreck of a service.

Edit 2024: People obviously only used it when logged into the site and never saw whatever that is.

Howto: Disable Mixed Content Blocking in Firefox

Firefox has a feature that prevents loading insecure content in secure (https) connections. Unfortunately this makes some websites almost unusable because you have to disable this per page not per domain, so if you load more then one page on a domain you might do it again and again and again (srsly, wtf).

Luckily this is Firefox and you can disable this in about:config by searching for mixed_content and setting the value of

security.mixed_content.block_active_content

to false by double-clicking it. (Via)

Note that I’m pretty sure that doing this is a SECURITY RISK because I don’t think Mozilla has this feature for the lolz. I’ll live with that though, until they’ll change this to blocking-per-domain.

EDIT: There’s a Plugin here to toggle this value, which might be safer then disabling it forever (there’s also one of toggling display_content). I’ll check them out.

Mako Mori Test 2.0

So the Mako Mori test (Via) is supposed to be another way of testing how media is treating female characters in a VERY BASIC way (like the Bechdel test). As pointed out here, passing these test doesn’t mean that the movie or whatever might still be sexist as hell, so focussing on these tests is somewhat problematic (it can still be a good way to get an overview of how staggeringly bad female represantation in (Hollywood mainstream) media is).

Anyway, the Mako Mori test goes like this:

The Mako Mori test is passed if the movie has: a) at least one female character; b) who gets her own narrative arc; c) that is not about supporting a man’s story. (Sauce)

laffbending (Via) pointed out a problem with this: there is no talk about race even though Mako Mori is a Japanese character. So my updated version would be:

The Mako Mori test 2.0 is passed if a movie (or any other story) has:

a) at least one female character that is not white,
b) who gets her own narrative arc,
c) that is not about supporting a man’s story.

And I’m afraid that narrows the few movies that would pass the Mako Mori test 1.0 down even more by quite a bit.

Update: Die Aktion hat dann gottseidank keine Konsequenzen, weil Herr Pirat entweder keinen Screenlock hatte oder dem Polizisten das Handy freigeschaltet hat.
