(Via) Und die Bullen sind außerdem krasser bewaffnet als Soldaten? Hey, und dann werfen sie auch gleich nochmal Tränengas auf Al-jazeera-Reporter und verhaften Washingtion und Huffington Post-Journalisten.

Soso, Hamburg will ein „Senatskonzept“ zur Aufarbeitung seines kolonialem Erbe erstellen. Wie machen die das? Erstmal „Selbstorganisationen Schwarzer und afrikanischer Menschen sowie postkoloniale Initiativen“ davon ausschließen!

Das Pad ist sehr umfangreich und hauptsächlich Ideensammlung/Organisation für mich, ihr dürft euch natürlich da gerne durchwühlen (und drin rumbschreiben). Die Story ist auf Englisch, weil ich das vielleicht auch Leuten von hier zeigen will.

Howto: get bookmarks, addons, open tabs, history etc. from one Firefox to another

Since Snowden (and even before that) I use Tor for my browsing that isn’t video or fancy Javascript commenting or whatever bullshit. And since the update function doesn’t work with Tor (you have to redownload the bundle everytime they update something) it’s nice to have a way to get your stuff from the old Firefox to the new one. And while there is FEBE to backup addons and I think there’s also a way to save all open tabs to bookmarks and then just reopening them there’s an much, much easier way to do this:

Copy the user-profile!

This is dead-simple. On the old version go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click on Profile Folder | Show in Finder. Close the browser and open the new one. Do the same thing again and copy the old profile (if you haven’t messed with it it should be profile.default) to the new one (DON’T FUCK THIS UP).

Webdesign: jfml.eu Portfolio Update

I finally got around to updating my portfolio site to fit the style of the blog. It’s very basic and I plan to to sub-pages for more illustrations, the projects etc. … Some day. It should also be a tinsy bit better for mobile devices (though I get almost zero visits with those) and I got rid of the <table> at last, yay!

Btw, I just learned how to do these screenshots with OSX: Cmd-Shift-4, Space, click the window. Awesome, though I’m not sure if you really need all the whitespace/shadows around it.

Bwahaha, wenn die Adobe „Creative Cloud“-Server down sind, kann man dann halt nicht arbeiten! Es wird echt Zeit, dass irgendjemand™ da mal benutzbare Alternativen schafft. Und zwar Open Source.

In der Donau gibt es mehr Plastikmülllpartikel als Fischlarven. Und 4,2 Tonnen davon werden pro Tag von der Donau ins schwarze Meer gespült. Was kann da schon schiefgehen! (Via Konscience)

We Are Comics zeigt die Diversität von Comic-/Graphic Novel-Schaffenden und LeserInnen in der Hoffnung, dass sich das Medium mal daran mehr orientiert.

Ich finde ja, dass Miller Columns (wie in OSXs Finder) die sinnvollste und schnellste Art ist sich in Dateisystemen zurechtzufinden. Das kombiniert mit dem Fensterunterteilungsystem von Blender, einer Favoriten/Laufwerksleiste und einer Fullscreen-Version von Quicklook wär der perfekte Datei-Manager. Wär Bock hat, dass mit mir OS-übergreifend umzusetzen (Python, Qt, HTML/Javascript?) meldet sich bei mir.

Die deutschen Piraten greifen zur Europawahl dann mal tief ins Sexismus-Klo (wählen wollte ich die allerdings auch schon vorher nicht …) Oha, die anderen Plakate sind dann ein tiefer Griff ins „Ich habe keine Ahnung von Typo oder Design“-Klo. Aua.

Annalee Newitz hat mal wieder einen coolen Artikel auf io9 geschrieben, diesmal über Samarkand und die Seidenstraße.

Das wirklich Gruselige daran, dass es in dt. Behörden Pornofilter gibt, finde ich ja, dass sich so Beamte neben ihrer Entmündigung auch gleich an ein zensiertes Internet gewöhnen. Da müssen wir uns dann halt auch nicht wundern, wenn der Aufschrei nicht so groß ist, wenn das dann generell eingeführt wird.

Hier stand mal viel zum Übertragen von Dateien im lokalen Netwerk, aber weil das aus dem Ruder lief, hat das jetzt einen eigenen Artikel und hier stattdessen: Monument Valley scheint Miegakure in schön aber mit weniger Mindfuck (und besserem Character-Design) zu sein.

So, after a pretty okayish diverse The Walking Dead, Telltame’s new game, Wolf Among Us looks pretty … white. Is that because of the old „There are PoC in fantasy/fairytales/past/history“-bullshit? Or is the source material shite? Shame anyway.

Using fonts from Google? Potential privacy fuckup.

I played around with Mozilla’s Lightbeam yesterday, a fancy plugin that visualizes which of the websites you visit load content from the same services. This is interesting because these services could potentially spy on your browsing across sites even without the use of cookies, supercookies etc. Or at least the owner of the service knows that someone accessed a specific site at a specific point in time and loaded a specific file from their server.

Anyway, maybe it’s only my personal taste but Google seems to be one of the top companies that would be able to do this (yes, aside of NSA and all the other government agencies, obviously). So surprising, I know!

Youtube is obvious, more or less every blog includes embedded Youtube-videos (including this one). I’m thinking of countering this with preview-gifs (or static jpgs) á la Boing Boing, Nerdcore, Kotaku etc. But this convenient „Click on the gif to play the video“ seems to demand a fair bit of programming (I’m guessing IFRAME?). I’m not sure about a solution for this yet.

The more interesting thing is fonts.googleapis.com. A lot of websites of seem to load stuff from there and I think we have to thank WordPress for that. Because the build-in themes that come with WordPress connect to Googles font-hosting service even if you have customized the themes and are using you own fonts. The HTML for this is generated via PHP and while there seems to be a way to turn this off I wasn’t able to do so.

But luckily there’s a plugin to disable Google Fonts! Thank you, Milan Dinić!

Genderswapping couple photo project!* It’s a bit sad that this only works because we still have clothing that „belongs“ to one gender (e.g skirt = female) and I think I like the project better where couples only changed the clothes they where actually wearing in day-to-day live. (I’m terrible at identifying gender in general so this is pretty fun for me. *I’m also terrible at placing hyphens correctly and writing in two languages doesn’t help with that at all).

O wow, look at this pile of shit: Some old white guy who’s best pals with Lars von Trier says „he is absolutely the opposite to a racist“* ?____? Because if anyone can be the judge if you’re a racist or not it’s obviously an old white dude! How do we know he’s the „absolute opposite to a racist“? Because he regularly casts zero PoC in his films? That’s colorblind casting for you! O wait, the article itself provides the evidence: „using the N-word when describing a ‘sandwich’ with two black men[…], before moving on to an impassioned defence of repressed paedophilia.“ Are. You. Serious. A white director who lets his main character (a white woman, fuck you too Charlotte Gainsbourg, btw for being part of this shit) use the N-word. Clearly the opposite of a racist. Meine Befürchtungen, dass es nicht so die glänzende Idee war einen Ghiblifilm über einen Designer von Kampflugzeugen zu machen, scheinen sich zu bewahrheiten (ohne ihn bisher gesehen zu haben): „Why did I never see anyone call out Hayao Miyazaki on his bullshit in “The Wind Rises”? He was glorifying the designer of the Zero’s Engine, Jiro Horikoshi. Asian Cinema: Hua Mulan (2009)

I’m usually not a fan of historical military movies (Red Cliff etc.), endless combat scenes get old for me very fast no matter how epic they are.

And essentially Hua Mulan is exactly that but while most of these films are also all about manly men-bros and their bromances this is obviously about a woman joining the army even though it is forbidden (this circumstance/setting makes this one of the weird movies that feature a strong female main character but still only barely pass the Bechdel test).

It’s far more entertaining and dramatic then most other endless battle films I’ve seen and it’s a lot of fun to watch, so go for it.

Ja ne, is klar, wenn es in Medien nicht um weiße Männern geht, dann verkauft sich das ÜBERHAUPT NICHT!

Ich erspar mir da jetzt mal irgendwelche Schlüsse zu ziehen aber es ist schon gruselig zu merken, dass in Walter Moers „Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher“ (und dem Teil der sterbenslangweiligen Fortsetzung, durch den ich mit gequält habe) genau eine weibliche Figur vorkommt, eine „Schreckse“ o____O Ja klar, Drachen und irgendwelche Hundewesen und blah. Aber Frauen? Don’t be ridiculous! Auch deutsche Fantasy hat halt den Horizont einer Müslischüssel.

(Mini-)Review: Queens of Langkasuka/The Tsunami Warrior

Hey, this is actually pretty nice. The fighting scenes are nothing special if you’re used to wuxia movies and the acting seems clumbsy in places but once the rather terrible first half is behind you there’s princess Ungu kicking ass and the end has some nice WTF-moments reminiscent of good old Hong Kong-cinema times. Also women leading armies in full glorious armor (with boobplates though, unfortunately)! Check it out!
